It’s a Hot GIRL Summer - You Lames!

It’s a Hot GIRL Summer - You Lames!

I love hip-hop culture! Everything from the cadences to couplets, spit ever-so-eloquently over heart-strumming melodies that stand the test of time to the flamboyant, braggadocios aesthetic of clothing.

Although I love the glory that Black culture has created, the womanist in me won’t allow me to look past the deep-rooted misogynoir that is present in the seams of rap’s genes. But this life is all about balance, they say – the good and the bad, to Lupe’s understanding, the food and liquor while to Charlamagne’s point of view, the righteous and ratchet.

But I’m writing this to address the latter - that is the bad, liquor and ratchet (the last two are debatable) because quite frankly I’m sick of it. Rap music is a male-dominated genre and sport. Men know it, and women know it too. So, it’s been incredibly beautiful to watch the resurgence of empowered women MC’s these past few years. Within the last year, in particular, rappers who happen to be women aren’t asking for male approval in their subject matter or delivery and MEN CAN’T STAND IT!

Men have had a solid 10 years with one or two women rappers at the forefront but for the most part, it was just men, running ramped, spewing the laws of patriarchy out their backsides. The very moment they heard “REAL ASS B*TCH, GIVE A F*CK ‘BOUT A N*GGA” and see women twerking unapologetically amongst other women they aren’t having it.

Hot Girl Summer is simply a phrase coined and spearheaded by rapper Megan Thee Stallion, and encouraged by The City Girls, for WOMEN to enjoy THEIR summers.

I’m not naïve to the fact that Thee Stallion and The City Girls rap about living their lives on their terms rather than allowing men to micromanage their lives, all the while treating the women in their lives like the scum of the earth. So, their lyrics present a potential solution, a revolutionary call to action, if you ask me – treating men how they treat women, with little to no respect. Finesse a dude out of a credit card or two, refusing to have any relations with said dude unless he pays for your time including, taxes and interest.

I won’t act oblivious to the distasteful and unethical narrative that is being pushed here. But you see Hot Girl Summer isn’t quite centered on one’s moral compass. In theory, I could also surely almosttttt empathize with men’s concern for his pockets and more importantly, the potential loss of power that arises in the scheme of patriarchy that has rewarded to bare minimum men for centuries. It’s a lot like white people not wanting to acknowledge or dismantle racism, because well, what would they benefit from that? But alas, getting “even” with dudes is not what Hot Girl Summer is all about, it may play a part, but that ain’t it. It’s also a lot of, “CUT A N*GGA OFF AND MY CHEQUES GOT BIGGER”.

The sentiment is a lot like a modern-day spin on Cyndi Lauper 80’s hit, “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”. That’s it, for the average, every day around the way girl, a chick just wants to have good ol’ harmless fun! Yet, butt-hurt men are soo pressed by the thought of women doing their own thing, without seeking male approval or validation that they’ve created their movement to continue to do the nonsense they already do.

For starters, a City Boy group is a figment of a lame man’s imagination and whoever has been appointed to lead the fictional movement, whether that be Tristan Thompson or Future already disregard women ALL YEAR LONG. You lames.

Alright, Mr. Me Too, join the rest of the sad, #MenAreTrash abolishers and the #BlackMenDontCheat society, and stamp your way on over to the autumn. Summer isn’t over yet, and as for summer 2019, women are still up by a landslide, because it wasn’t a competition anyhow. The OG movement centers US, and we are enjoying ourselves no matter what y’all have to say about it!

How is your hot GIRL summer going ladies?
