5 Songs for the Grown and Sexy

5 Songs for the Grown and Sexy

1. “Lazy Afternoon” by The Roots

“Lazy Afternoon” is track 7 off of The Roots’ 1995 album, Do You Want More?!!!??!. The song’s lyrics detail the summer Saturday of a person who has nothing but time on their hands. Black Thought recites his day in chronological order; beginning the song as he wakes up around 12:20 and taking the audience on the journey of his day up until he’s about to go hang with, “the crew”, around 3:37. A mellow beat, soft vocals, and Black Thought’s swag and suave delivery make this song the perfect to have a “Lazy Afternoon” to.

Juvenile, “Slow Motion”

Juvenile’s “Slow Motion” is an early 2003 banger with some serious bounce and swang. A winding beat fueled by the hypnotic strings on a guitar, “Slow Motion”, is a grown folk dance record. Perfect to jam out to by yourself on a chilly day or to the wind and grind on your dance partner.

3. UCB “Sexy Lady”

While Gogo hit, “Sexy Lady” may be foreign to some, those from the DMV know it’s a classic. The Gogo beat layered with the lead singer’s crooning sweet nothing’s make it the perfect soundtrack to your night out.

4. Solange- “Binz”

Solange’s “Binz” is one of the breakout hits from her latest album, When I Get Home. “Binz” gives its audience a first eye look into Solange’s version of Utopia. She sings, “I just wanna wake up to the suns in Saint Laurent,
Hundred thousand dollars on the fronts, hella blunts,
I just wanna wake up on ya thigh, on a yacht, Or in the Rolls that's rented, windows tinted, We call that big spendin', big spendin'.” The song is short and sweet clocking in at around two minutes, so you’ll find yourself abusing the repeat button. Repetitive and rhythmic hats give the beat of the song a Houston “swang” and the horns create a New Orleans Jazz sound. It’s funky, it’s smooth, it’s grown and sexy approved.

5. Playboi Carti “Love Hurts”

Playboi Carti’s “Love Hurts" has a beat that just won’t rest. A feature from Houston’s own Travis Scott adds the right amount of H-town swag and twerkalicious bounce. Scott croons, “shawty want a rockstar” throughout the song as the rock-infused instrumental loops in the background. If a party is dead “Love Hurts” is sure to get it jumping.
